The Importance of Umpires

Every Club Needs One or More Umpires.

Within each Ontario Lawn Bowling Association, District, there is an obligation for club's to share umpires.

Heather Comba is Milton's Chief Coach and Umpire. However, Heather is in great demand for her coaching skills and is seldom available to Umpire. Heather has both her Canadian and US Umpire Certification.

The OLBA Provides Training.

Check out the OLBA website - under programs, to find out when Umpire training is next avaialble.

Please apply if you are interested.

Umpires are Necessary for a Healthy Competitive Environment.

Umpires keep the competition moving to a tight time schedule. They hurry up slow players.

They ensure that, if there is a dispute, that it is resolved fairly and equtably.

Umpire Skills

It takes a certain, detail-oriented personality type to make a responsible and effective Umpire.

- Good Memory (know the rules or know where to quickly find the rule).

- Firm but polite, in control, no nonsence, I will resolve this!

- Unflappable under the pressure of the situation.

- Unbiased

Heather says "An umpire needs to solve issues by gathering the facts, knowing the rules and interpreting those rules for that situation. Not an easy job as the solution must be made in a short time frame and must be defendable".

If all this sounds interesting to you, please apply for training through the OLBA under Programs.

Here are three photographs of Umpires at a District Pairs event held at Milton on June 10 & 11, 2017.
